Commitments Utilization

Commitment utilization refers to the extent to which the costs of commitment pre-purchasing are applied to (consumed by) compatible resources at the discounted rate, replacing PAYG rates. With insufficient discountable resources the purchase costs cannot be applied and are lost. The spend is wasted. This is under-utilization. The Utilization report tracks utilization and wasted commitment spend.
The report also provides visibility of where commitment instruments are applying across various dimensions such as subaccounts and region, helping you understand the scope of your commitments. A commitment’s scope is part of its configuration and determines the subaccounts, regions, etc. where they can apply. Commitments with insufficient discountable resources in their scope will be under-utilized. Understanding commitment scope is vital to investigating and remediating under-utilization.
Costs on this screen are displayed in your base currency.
Cumulative Wasted Costs Trend
The Cumulative Wasted Costs chart shows the total aggregate of un-applied (wasted) commitment purchasing across the full, historical extent of your FOCUS data. This chart can never go down, but your job is to keep it as level as possible and act on upward movement that indicates emerging under-utilization.
Wastage Chart
If you see upwards movement in the cumulative chart (above), check this chart and mouse-over the column blocks to see the emerging wasted spend per commitment.
Clicking on a chart block will filter both the utilization table and the utilization scope matrix by the selected commitment.
Utilization Table
This table shows commitments, their type, and utilization percent over the last 30 days. Utilization percent is the ratio of consumed purchase spend to total purchase spend, so the higher the percentage, the lower the under-utilization and wastage. The table is sorted on utilization percent ascending so that you can see the least utilized commitments at the top of the table.
Clicking on a row in this chart will filter all of the other visuals, except the cumulative trend.
Purchase History Chart
This 6-month chart shows purchase spend by commitment. Click the drill-thru arrow icon to switch to a pre-defined view of commitment purchasing in Explorer.
Utilization Scope Matrix
This matrix shows where your commitments are being applied to discountable resources, across two customizable dimensions. Use the Perspective selectors to choose the row and column dimensions, with the default being subaccount as rows and region as columns.
Click on the Wastage Trend or Utilization table to filter the matrix on a single commitment.
The data in the matrix cells include a commitment type codes, and the number of discounted resources in parentheses. The type code shows the first two letters of commitment types that have applied, e.g. “ReSa” means reservations AND savings plans have both been applied to resources in scope of the cell.
