Optimization Insights

Optimization Insights analyse resource configuration, utilization metrics, and costs to provide a range of optimization recommendations.

The main page displays summary information tiles with links to a special S3 duplicates report and a committed use discount rate optimization report.

Below that are the recommendation tiles, for example:

In the example above we can see:

  • Then name, indicating the recommendation type.

  • Possible monthly savings. Not all recommendation types can have savings associated with them.

  • The cloud vendors and services for which the recommendation applies.

Clicking Show More on a tile (seen in the image above) will display the evaluation criteria, a truncated list of resources in scope, and a link to open a blade for viewing/managing resources in scope:

The criteria items in bold (above) can be customised via the menu next to the recommendation name:

With this menu, you can:

  • Adjust the evaluation criteria for the recommendation:

  • Pin the recommendation at the top of the section list, over-riding the default tile placement based on cost severity.

  • Select pools for which all pool resources will be excluded from consideration for the recommendation type:

Clicking on the See <qty> items link on a tile opens a list of all resources in scope, with an Active, Dismissed and Excluded page:

  • Active shows resources in scope of the recommendation. Clicking on the eye icon to the right of a resource will exclude the resource and its costs from inclusion in the recommendation.

  • Dismissed show resources that are excluded by dismissal. Clicking the eye icon on these will move them back active consideration.

  • Excluded shows resources that were excluded at the pool level and also provides a link to manage pool exclusions.

Clicking on a resource name in one of the lists takes you to the Resources reporting where you can validate resource usage metrics (e.g. instance CPU), for example:

The Optimization Insights page of the Resource Details screen shows recommendations that the resource is currently in scope of, and those from which the resource has been dismissed (excluded). Using the eye icons, the resource can be excluded from, or re-included in, the displayed recommendation types:

Evaluation of resource inclusion in recommendations is periodically calculated in the background, according to a schedule. Evaluation status can be reviewed using these summary tiles at the top of the main Optimization Insights screen:

Administrators can initiate a re-evaluation of all tiles using the Force check item in the Actions menu the top-right:

The recommendations Archive screen accessed from the Actions menu shows explorable background events as resources fall in and out of criteria:

User will receive email notifications to alert of new resource recommendations.

There is an Optimization Insights tile on the Executive Dashboard:

Features of this tile include:

  • A link at the top-right to the unfiltered Optimization Insights screen.

  • A donut chart comparing possible monthly savings against forecast spend for the current month.

  • Total number of resources in each recommendation category.

  • Link to the Optimization Insights screen, filtered on the chosen category.

The categories are:

Cost, where possible savings can be calculated for the type.

Security, which are security-related and can have no savings calculated.

Critical, where possible savings are high.
